Growing Opportunities and People's Market

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SCCAP Starts Family Enrichment Program & Closes Greenhouse

Bloomington, Ind. (March 25, 2024) – South Central Community Action Program (SCCAP) announces a new initiative under Growing Opportunities that will provide family enrichment, case work, and fill gaps in programming for SCCAP clients. Growing Opportunities is a SCCAP program that for 10 years has addressed the issue of food insecurity for our region by growing and donating fresh produce to low-income community members. Growing Opportunities used a hydroponic greenhouse to grow fresh produce for community members and made deliveries to their homes. The greenhouse previously used by the program has been purchased by People’s Market to support them in their fight towards providing equitable access to healthy local food and education to our community. Growing Opportunities will continue to make deliveries to our homebound community members in partnership with Pantry 279 and Monroe County United Ministries.

Moving forward Growing Opportunities will use a holistic approach to serve our community members. While still addressing food insecurity we will also be meeting our clients where they are and assisting with other existing needs. We will be doing this by connecting them with community partners, ensuring they have applied for all SCCAP services, and debt relief programming. Growing Opportunities will be working directly with clients to ensure that they are receiving services needed to help them thrive.

Our former greenhouse manager, Errin Logsdon, is leading the charge in the redirection of Growing Opportunities. “The goal of Growing Opportunities has always been to reduce barriers to food equality and education. Whether through our greenhouse, pantry cooking program, rural and homebound food delivery, or nutrition education we wanted to connect our community with the services they needed. People's Market has been making huge strides in the fight for food equality; the acquisition of the greenhouse is such a natural progression in their mission. We are so excited to see what this growing season has in store for them. It will also be an amazing growing season for Growing Opportunities. This one-on-one holistic relationship with our community members will allow us to remove access barriers to ensure that they are receiving the services needed to help them thrive.”

People’s Cooperative Market Expands to On the Ground Location

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 1, 2020
Media Contact: Brandi Williams
peoplesmarketinfo@gmail.com

BLOOMINGTON, IN-- The People’s Cooperative Market is proud to welcome the community to our on-the-ground opening! On Saturday, July 4, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., the market will operate at 3220 East 3rd Street on the west end of the former Kmart lot closest to Target. Showcasing a range of local products, the market will remain open, rain or shine, every Saturday this summer.

The People’s Market is a woman-led cooperative coalition of growers, artisans, activists, and other community members who donate time, resources, and energy to ensure that Black and Brown community members can buy, sell, and share in safety, and in community, and to enjoy local products in a space free from individuals who identify as members of hate groups.

The People’s Market CSA has been operating as a contact-free drive-through since March, and will continue this practice in conjunction with the on-the-ground operations. The online store, open from 8 a.m. Monday to 5 p.m. Wednesday, provides shoppers with the staples, but has a more limited list of products provided by our vendors and growers. At the on-the-ground location, a wider variety of items and products will be offered including seasonal vegetables, special plant varieties, prepared food, and beverages.

All vendors will practice COVID-19 safety guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Throughout the market space, customers will have access to hand sanitizer and free masks upon request. Patrons stay safe by practicing social distancing, wearing a mask at all times and sending an alternative shopper if they are feeling sick. Parking is available on the east end of the lot, when entering from Clarizz Blvd.

Community members are encouraged to donate a sponsored box to feed families and individuals experiencing food insecurity, volunteer their time to serve on Saturday mornings, contribute funds weekly directly to People’s Market, and spread the word by following on social media and sharing posts. To get involved, please visit www.peoplesmarketbtown.org

The People’s Market is a fiscally sponsored program of Artisan Alley, an educational and creative cooperative hub for the Bloomington community.

People’s Cooperative Market Mission Statement:

The People’s Cooperative Market envisions a market community driven by a set of values that reflect the highest aspirations for inclusiveness in significant and meaningful ways. Cultivating a sense of belonging for all who share these values is a main objective. We strive to build equity, create relationships, and cultivate social justice through access to local food, art, and education. Together, we transform our community.
